Barclays Premier League Stoke v Chelsea Match Preview, Sunday 14 Aug 2011 13:30

Although Stoke finished in 13th place, they were the 7th best home team last term scoring 31 goals, one more than 5th placed Tottenham and only conceded 18 goals at home, one less than Tottenham.

Tony Pulis has done remarkably well with limited resources, taking Stoke to the FA Cup final, which they lost 0-1 to Man City (with their immense financial strength!)

That being said, this is football on a different playing field. Chelsea ended the season with nothing shiny to take back to Stamford Bridge after a League title/FA Cup double the previous season, and they have Villas-Boas eager to make a necessarily speedy positive impression (5 managers in 3 years).  I can see Chelsea starting the season with all guns blazing, as they did last season; scoring 6 goals without reply in each of their first two league games, at home to West Brom and away toWigan. In their first 7 games of last season, Chelsea scored a total of 28 goals whilst conceding only 6 goals.

Last season, Chelsea had the joint best defensive record with Man City, with respect to goals conceded, and the second best goals scored total of 69, compared to Stoke’s 46 goals.

Before Chelsea’s form dropped off in the last 3 games of the season,Chelsea had gone 10 league games undefeated with 8 wins and 2 draws.

With the players Chelsea have at their disposal, where a player of Drogba’s quality isn’t sure if he will get a game, I can’t see past an away win here, but Stoke will be no pushover.

Away win 1-2

Current best odds for the away win are from PaddyPower at 1.67
and the best odds for the 1-2 scoreline are from Victor Chandler at 8.50

Barclays Premier League, Newcastle v Arsenal match preview Saturday 13 Aug 2011 17:30

All is not well at the Emirates Stadium, there are too many negative stories surrounding Arsenal at the moment and it must be one of the toughest times that Arsene and the club has endured. Collective Aaaaahh from non Arsenal fans.

Arsenal Captain, Cesc Fabregas has not taken part in any pre-season games, still has a hamstring problem, and is still being hunted by Barcelona. Jack Wilshere has an ankle injury, and Theo Walcott’s recurring ankle injury has flared up again.

Wenger’s £10m offer for Jagielka was turned down, and Everton want double that.  Mata’s buyout clause expired on Sunday and his potential move to Arsenal is dependent on Fabregas leaving the club, they need the positive cashflow. Wenger is desperate to build the Arsenal squad, but August and the end of the transfer window will be over before Wenger can say Nasri is staying at Arsenal a few more times. I hope that all is well at home for Arsene!

Over to form: Arsenal had the highest goals tally away from home in the league last season with 39 goals scored, Chelsea were second with 30, United third with 29 goals.

Newcastle who finished 12th last season had the second highest home goals scored total with 41 goals scored at St James’s Park, but only managed to win six home games, drawing eight.

Last season’s equivalent fixture in February ended in a thrilling 4-4 draw, and Newcastle’s last two results of last season were a 3-3 home draw against West Brom, and a 2-2 away draw at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal had a dismal end to their season, only winning one of their last 7 league matches and drawing 6 of their last 12.

This match has DRAW written all over it. 2-2 is probably your best value.

Currently, best odds for the draw are 3.50 with Bet365 and 15.00 with William Hill for the correct score of 2-2.

Barclays Premier League, Liverpool v Sunderland, Saturday 13 Aug 2011 15:00

Liverpool will be desperate to put the last two seasons behind them where they failed to finish in the top 5 in the league, after finishing in the top 4 for the previous four seasons.

Liverpool do look a different prospect with King Kenny at the helm, and should be back in the top 4 again this season. The speed at which Luis Suarez has settled in, probably makes Fernando Torres choke on his cornflakes most mornings.

I look forward to seeing how Charlie Adam will fit in at Liverpool, I don’t think there will be any problems there and Andy Carroll, (£35m, the most expensive British transfer) should be the main beneficiary. I believe we have only seen the tip of the iceberg with Andy Carroll, he is only 22 years old, he could shine this season.

Sunderland who usually end up in the bottom half of the table, managed to finish the season slap bang in the middle, in 10th place. Steve Bruce has done well there and thankfully been given the time and space to prove his metal. Surplus to requirement Man United defenders, O’Shea and Brown can only strengthen Sunderland’s place in the Premier league.

I can see Sunderland being a little harder to beat home and away this season, but even though they have the exciting Ghanain Gyan, they currently don’t have enough quality firepower to climb much higher than 10th.

Liverpool had a solid 12 4 3 home record last season and have a good record against Sunderland in the league, winning 8 of their last 10 league meetings, drawing one and losing one (away), scoring 16 goals against 3 conceded.

I can only see a home win here: 2-0

Currently, best odds for the home win are 1.40 with PaddyPower and 6.00 with VictorChandler for the correct score of 2-0.
