Man United v Man City Match Preview Sunday 23 Oct 2011 13:30

The BIG one, one that many of us are relishing, and perhaps the “derby” that United have been waiting for, for too many years! Manchester Champions, United, take on Manchester league leaders, and “noisy neighbours”, but serious challengers to United’s crown, City. Following a disappointing North West derby against Liverpool last Saturday, this Manchester derby should serve up a football feast, plenty of goals to boot, and I expect a bagful of yellow and perhaps a red card or two.

Both teams are unbeaten in the league this season. City leapfrogged United last Saturday when United failed to beat Liverpool and looked like they were simply stopping the rot at Anfield, after 3 successive league defeats there.

City have the best away form, and the equal (with United) best home form in the Premier League. Although United and City have the same points at home and the same goal difference, United have scored more goals at home (22:6) and City have conceded fewer at home (17:1)

Both teams have gone 11 league matches without defeat, but United are on the 19 theme this weekend, 19 titles and 19 successive home victories. Will a 20th successive home victory prove to be pivotal at the end of the season and provide United with their 20th top flight title?

There is hardly a gnat’s eyelash between these two sides and I don’t see that changing too much through the next seven months, maybe this match, so early in the season, will prove to be a title decider?

United’s goal scoring capability has fallen away in their last three league matches, in which they have only scored four goals in total, drawing 1-1 twice.  United were averaging over four goals a game before this; City on the other hand, have scored four goals in each of their last two league matches.

Head to head, City have failed to beat United in their last 6 league meetings, losing five and drawing one. Home advantage, and dropping four points in their last three matches should also work in United’s favour. Rooney will be up for it, following his Montenegro moment of madness and limited opportunity at Anfield. City have the firepower for sure and may score 2 or 3 goals, but I think that United will be swapping places with City in the league come Sunday evening.

Might be worth looking at the goals markets too, I would be surprised to see less than 4 goals scored in this match.  Odds for over 3 goals are 3.00 with Bet365.

Man United home win, correct score 3-2 or even 4-3 …again!!

Best odds for the home win, are currently 2.10 with Bet365  and for the correct score of 3-2 the best odds are 26.00 with William Hill – and for the repeat score of two years ago at Old Trafford, 4-3, the best odds are a massive 151.00 with Blue Square. I will be at the match and will be covering both the above scores.

Wolves v Swansea Match Preview Saturday 22 Oct 2011 12:45

Both teams are having a tough time right now, but Wolves are stuck in a rut, on a run of 5 successive league defeats, along with Wigan, the worst run across all leagues.

Although Wolves began the season brightly, with two victories over Blackburn and Fulham in which they scored four goals and only conceded one; since then, the goals have dried up. In their last 6 league matches, Wolves have only scored 2 goals, but have conceded 11, the lowest goal scoring record in the Premier League and the lowest across all leagues, only matched by Middlesboro in the Championship, who scored two goals but only conceded three.

Wolves now find themselves bottom of the 6 match form table, and have slipped down to 16th in the league.

Mick McCarthy is under pressure as his side fail to convert their chances. Wolves put up a good fight against Liverpool last month, shared possession and shots on target.  At home to Newcastle at the beginning of the month, Wolves had the majority of possession, and twice as many attempts on target, then last Sunday, Wolves had a similar number of attempts on target against the Baggies, but they lost all of these games.

Swanseaare 13th in both the league and the form table with two victories, one draw and three defeats in their last six.  Their results at home are a complete reverse image of their results away, when they cross the Severn into England they seem to be a different team.

When these two last met in the Championship in 2008, both sides won their home matches, losing away.

There are still 9 teams in the Premier league who remain unbeaten at home, Swansea are one of them, but there is only one team who have not conceded a single goal at home this season – Swansea. In fact no other team in any league can boast this, not even Rangers or Celtic. Swansea’s next home game is against Bolton, who have the worst home record (not away though) across all leagues, Swansea could continue this incredible home run, but the next home after that, is against Man United.

Swansea’s away record and away goal ratio is as bad as Wolves’ current form and goal ratio. Swansea have lost all four of their away matches with a 2:12 goal ratio; however these away games include Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea. Against Norwich last Saturday, Swansea struggled to overcome a 2-0 deficit within 10 minutes, and should be more alert next time they walk out onto the pitch on Saturday.

Swansea have had solid wins against Stoke (2-0) and West Brom (3-0) in recent weeks, without reply. Wolves lost at home 0-3 to new boys QPR last month and given their current inability to convert, I oppose the bookies and expect to see Swansea take their first away points, and possibly all three. Great value around 3/1.

Swansea away win, correct score 1-2

Best odds for the away win, are currently 4.00 with Victor Chandler  and for the correct score of 1-2 the best odds are 13.00 with Bet365

Ian Ayre, current Managing Director of Liverpool Football Club – you are on your own

Ian Ayre, MD of Liverpool needs to understand what the Premier League is and what it represents before he opens his mouth.  Since his naïve comments yesterday, he has managed to alienate every Premier League Chairman, Manager and director, as well as many fans including Liverpool fans, the Spirit of Shankly (SOS) and the Football Supporters’ Federation.

Since the creation of the Premier League in 1992, the Premier League has gone from strength to strength and is by far the most watched league and the greatest generator of revenue in the world.

Consequently, TV rights from foreign broadcasters total £1.46bn and are almost equal to the rights for La Liga and Serie A combined.  Ian Ayre asked why Liverpool should share the revenue “just to be nice” to smaller rivals. Well Ian, think about what the Premier League is and why it is so successful and understand it’s structure. The current 20 clubs in the Premier League are it’s equal shareholders (note the word “equal” Ian).

The Premier league is the most watched league in the world because of the 20 teams that take part and the competition that it brings.

I am flabbergasted that the Managing Director of a mult-million pound business and global brand can come out with such short-sighted, unintelligent nonsense.  Footballers have a duty to behave professionally on and off the pitch, you would expect any director of a football club to do the same and have a much better understanding of the world in which their club and business operates.

Contrast Ayre’s comments with Sir Alex Ferguson’s – “We’d love to have our own (TV rights) but I don’t think it should happen that way. It’s quite fair to have all equal shares.” This from a club who have 354m fans around the world compared to Liverpool’s 71m, so United’s “fair share” Ian, would be five times Liverpool’s and in absolute terms, United would get almost 50% of the TV rights money ie £179m per annum, ten times the £17.9m they currently get when shared equally.

Sir Alex Ferguson is happy that £161m per annum, that in Ian Ayre’s world would be “MINE”, is shared across all other 19 clubs who have equal shares and voting rights in the Premier League.  Yesterday, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man City supported Ferguson’s view that rights should be shared equally – Ian Ayre, current Managing Director of Liverpool Football Club – you are on your own.
